Borders and Policing
Assuring security and fairness in critical state services.
BixeLab provides biometric testing and validation services for biometric systems used in critical state functions such as management of entrance and exit at border crossings, matching of biometric data for investigative work in policing, and similar sensitive contexts.
We help governments assess whether their biometric systems perform reliably under operational conditions—ensuring accurate identity matching, resistance to spoofing, reduction in rework, and adherence to relevant compliance frameworks.
What Are Biometrics Used for in Borders and Policing?
Border systems use biometrics—such as facial, fingerprint, or iris recognition—to verify that travellers crossing borders are presenting their own identity documents, and to ensure that visitors are identified appropriately according to their nation’s framework for this. In policing, a range of biometric modes are used across a spectrum of use cases, depending on the requirements of the police force in question. Long-established use cases such as manual examination of fingerprints in investigations often sit alongside recent developments in machine matching of images from video footage to establish the identity of offenders – with a wide range of other techniques also used. Because of the very serious consequences of failures, mis-identifications, or missed identifications in all these contexts, human review of machine-led processes is the norm – and, for this reason, both independent assessment of the operational performance of machine biometrics as well as proper selection and training of the personnel involved in oversight are important aspects to public confidence in the use of such techniques.
Real-world factors such as lighting, motion, camera positioning, Personal Protective Equipment (e.g., face masks), and environmental stressors all impact system performance. BixeLab helps clients test and optimise biometric system performance in the complex, and often uncontrolled, environments in which they are deployed.
Benefits of Testing Borders and Policing Systems

Operational Readiness
Ensure systems and personnel perform accurately and consistently in the actual environments where they are deployed.

Public Confidence
Ensure public confidence through independent assurance of the tools used to perform critical services of the state in a way that supports all citizens’ interests.

Prevent Critical Failures
Avoid false rejections, spoofing attacks, mistaken identities or delays in critical scenarios like busy airports and crime investigations.

Why Work with BixeLab?
Q: Can you simulate real-world environments for testing?
Yes. We conduct laboratory and field testing under variable lighting, temperature, and usage scenarios to match your deployment conditions.
Q: Are your tests aligned to international standards?
Absolutely. We use ISO/IEC 19795, 30107-3, and NVLAP-aligned protocols to ensure recognised, repeatable evaluations.
Q: Can you help if our environment is securely locked down?
Of course. Several of our customers have high-security systems, inaccessible to outsiders even for independent testing. We work with you to define protocols and mechanisms so that appropriate personnel can perform the assurance process securely and confidently.
